PCI DSS
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a worldwide data security standard for protecting credit and debit card data.
It comprises a set of criteria for retail practices set out by MasterCard International and Visa International, and endorsed by the other leading card schemes.
The PCI DSS initiative was designed to cut the growing number of security breaches and card frauds and stimulate consumer confidence in the use of credit and debit cards. Applying to all merchants, whether online or store based, and to both "customer present" and "not present" card transactions, security is implemented by a series of requirements which retailers must meet. This means that any business involved in money transfers utilising cardholder data has to ensure its store management complies with PCI DSS requirements.
PCI DSS - Directives for Retailers
The security framework outlined by the PCI DSS specifies technological, support process and employee training criteria that businesses must meet. Substantial fines can be levied against businesses who do not comply with the standard, and security incidents can lead to permanent disqualification from the card acceptance programme.
